Hello Gator Fans:
As my title states, I'm still not happy. Why? Well....let me count the ways....
1. Coaching
After a bye, the coaching should have improved (in my eyes). I don't think it happened. After the Defense picks off Georgia inside the 30 yard line, the Offense stalls. Defense gives up 30+ points, but this time we win...whewww. Offense left points off the board: Well the 1st and 3rd Quarters were blanks...we should be able to score once in those quarters...right? Our QB coach is a pro-style coach, but our offense isn't...how does he keep letting this happen? It seems Urban has his hand in alot of the coaching decisions, but unless someone steps up (or is given the keys)...he should take over more.
2. Offensive Line
I can't believe this was suppose to be the solid and most experienced part of our team. 4 Seniors were suppose to anchor a line that would take any pressure off John Brantley. Well that's not happening (now we have 2 sophomores playing significant minutes). Linebackers are still coming up the middle untouched and putting John to the ground. One play stands out were a lineman basically did an 'Ole' technique letting the Defensive Lineman through the line so he could tackle the QB....bad...bad...bad. All the snaps looked good, but John seems to still bobble the ball. Probably worried that he is going to get hit again...
3. Offensive Play Calling
Hmmmmm......John Brantley playing WR wasn't what a expected after 2 weeks to prepare for the Georgia game. But's that's what happened (during the first possession, no less). This is Brantley, probably the best Pro prospect the Gators have had in a while and it seems he moves out wide on every other play. Is this suppose to trick the defense? No. Then I thought maybe, they plan to throw a lateral to him and let him zing it down the field...NO. And to top it off, then they put Burton in the back field, then motion Brantley back there to take the snap...What is that? Oh yeah, now we have found out that Brantley and Burton need more help...Jordan Reed seem to have set plays made up. No wonder the players can't seem to get into a rhythm. The Gators are running offense for 3 different QBs all in the same game. No wonder it takes a whole quarter to get started, before we put points on the board. 2 weeks to improve the offense and this is what we got....I'm not impressed.
4. Defensive Line
Aaron Murray must be on the Gator Defensive's Line payroll, because he didn't light us up and much as he could. Since he had not pressure, he had alot of time to over throw alot of players and kill drives. Lucky for us, he forgot A.J. Green was on his team (until the 4th quarter). The defensive ends couldn't contain anyone...so many times Georgia was able to turn the corner and there was no one there....No one.... With Jaye Howard out, we took a step back. Usually a bye week is suppose to get players more opportunity to play, didn't seem like that happened on the D-Line. Although, I did see Floyd out there, his presence wasn't felt, especially on the passing downs.
5. Defensive Play Calling
Blitzing is suppose to put pressure on the QB, but the Gators Blitzing seems to only put pressure on the Gator D-Backs. So many times, the Gator blitzed and never got to the QB. I don't believe delayed blitzes work, so we should probably stop that. Georgia was able to more the ball in the 4th quarter at will: giving up more points in the 4th quarter, than in the prior 3 quarters isn't going to work. Lucky for the Gators, the defense has been able to hold teams in the 1st half of most games.
But I am happy for a few thing....
1. Resilient Players
Luckily of the Gator's Coaching staff, they have such resilient players. The coaches don't seem to be putting the players in enough positions to excel, but the players do what they can. Brantley is saying all the right things, but you have to wonder how he would play somewhere else. I feel he needs a 300+ day to feel like this was good idea to stay behind Tebow for 2 years...
2. Will 'The Thrill' King
Will King finally showed up and displayed what we expected. The hit that sent the GA player to the ground for awhile (to collect thoughts) was nice. Then he almost finishes off the game with a pick-6. Too bad the QB got the way (Gators couldn't lay him out, so he slows down King and GA players run him out of bounce).
Hopefully, we see improvement from this game...(probably should be able to do these things against Vandy...I hope)
This is all I ask for...
1. Score in every Quarter. (maybe 50+ scoring effort)
2. Pressure from the D-Line Only
3. Pick-6
4. TD drives of over 70 yards
5. Special Teams Block Kick/Punt
6. 100 yard rusher who isn't a QB.
Not much...right?
